Candace and her friend Tim were in ninth grade. They lived in the same neighborhood and were excited about going to the new high school. They both liked their new classes and teachers. It was a change from middle school because students had more independence. Candace had protective parents and was only allowed to have a few friends. She wanted to be more popular and planned on joining the drill team. Now that she was a freshman, her parents promised to give her more freedom.
Tim was on the Cougar football team and planned to try-out for the junior varsity team this year. Tim had lots of buddies and they would hang out and play games, sports, or listen to music on their Ipods. Tim made the football team and Candace make the drill team at their high school. Candace had a lot of new friends and made good grades. They were both getting ready for a big football game coming up on Friday night. They received a text from Jordan to come to a party at his house after the football game.He played on team with Tim.Over 20 kids were invited to the party.
The Cougars won the game on Friday night and Tim went over to Jordan’s house a little after the game was over. Candice was excited about going to the party even thought she did not know Jordan very well. Candace’s parents gave her permission to go to the party so she got a ride with Tina. They arrived at Jordan’s house at about 10:15 pm. Time passed and the party was in full swing around 11 pm. Over 30 kids showed up. Some were not invited. They ate pizza, fruit, Chex Mix , and drank Hawaiian fruit punch. Tim and Some of the guys played fantasy football and the music was super loud. Candace and Tina ran into some of the drill team girls and met some boys.They were having a good time.
Candace was in the kitchen when she noticed Jordan pouring something in a new bowl of punch. She did not say anything. After all she did not want to cause any drama with her new friends. Tim, Jordan and some other guys went upstairs and came down with a little brown box. Jordan went to a corner table and opened the top of the box. Candace peeked around the shoulder of one of the football players and saw marijuana and pills in the box. She told Tina and a couple of the other girls that were in the living room. Then Candace noticed that Jordan was walking towards her with some white pills in his hand. He asked if they wanted to “party”. She saw Tim on the patio smoking pot and laughing. All of the girls including Tina took one of the pills. Candace was surprised at what was happening and looked around at the other girls.
Jordan then offered a pill to Candace. Everyone looked and waited. Candace had to make a decision. Her head was spinning and she thought about the harm that the pills may cause to her body. She had to choose whether to fit in with some of her peers or take a chance of never being invited to a high school party again.What would she do?
*Note: We all wonder what Candace will do. She is on her own in this situation.Will she accept the pills? How badly does Candace want to be friends with the “in crowd"? Will Candace forget about the D.A.R.E. class she took in 5th grade that taught her about the harmful effects of drugs and how to resist these substances? Will her parents or drill instructor find out about the pills? Or will Candace weaken from the weight of peer pressure and place herself in a corner of no return?
